About Us

Playways Playgroup started at Rainham Methodist Church in 1975 and has been very much part of the Rainham community. In September 2015 the setting was taken over by new management and changed its name to Playways Pre-school.

The pre-school provides a friendly, welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone. We offer a wide range of activities, encouraging children's free choice of resources, that accommodate all areas of development. Our high adult to child ratio assists us in supporting and promoting children's developmental skills irrespective of their ability.

The garden is easily accessed from the hall where the children can use their imagination on our outdoor stage, make mud pies in the mud kitchen, search for bugs and insects and grow vegetables which we often eat at snack time.
We encourage the children to free flow between the inside and out for most of the day.

Intent

Our curriculum is designed so that all children who attend our setting develop verbally, cognitively, physically and emotionally throughout the process of experiencing the 7 areas of learning of the EYFS.
We value all children as individuals and are passionate that they all reach their full potential and want to give them the cultural capital they need for their ongoing learning journey.
When a child starts with us, we look at their individual needs and starting points, through observations and talking with their parents. We then develop our curriculum to cater for them at a point which is suitable for their correct age and stage of development.
We aim for our children to become:

Competent learners - So that children can flourish and reach their full potential
Skilful communicators - To be able to communicate effectively in their own way, making a positive contribution to society
Confident, resilient and independent - To learn behaviours needed to succeed in the world

Implementation

By talking with the parents/families we learn and understand about the children's interests, which helps us provide opportunities through our 'IN the Moment' approach to learning.
Staff take advantage of those teachable moments that happen every day by supporting and enhancing the children's interest and skills.
The In the Moment Planning that is used by the early years educators means that when a child is interested in something or needs support, the educator will step in to help or extend the opportunity of interest. These teachable moments are then documented, and progress is checked against the Development matters to ensure they are reaching the targets for the age and stage of development of the individual child.
The Characteristic of Effective Learning - 'playing and exploring', 'active learning' and creating and thinking critically' underpin the children's learning and development across the seven areas.
We offer various experiences to the children during the week, such as visits from a sports coach and music teacher to visits to our local allotment.
We keep parents informed by meeting in person or on the telephone for consultations and offer termly play and stay sessions.

Impact

We have high expectations for all the children to achieve a good level of progress throughout their time at preschool.
Staff develop strong relationships with the families to make effective observations of the children's starting points.
We measure the children's learning through formative and summative assessment which are based on the educators knowledge of the child, photographs and learning journal.
Formative assessment takes place through everyday interactions in which staff support children in their learning.
Summative assessments are made termly when staff update learning journals with any completed learning journeys, photos and work samples.
